Identity Theft Protection

What is identity theft?

Identity theft is when an unauthorized person gains access to your personal information or accounts without your knowledge. The two major types of identity theft are:

• Credit fraud: When someone uses your information to gain access to your credit card or to apply for credit in your name. This can lead to fraudulent charges on your accounts or even unknown loans opened in your name.

• Identity fraud: When someone gains access to your personal information and attempts to use your financial resources or other benefits, such as medical or social security, in your name.

Unfortunately there is no way to prevent identity theft, but identity theft protection services can help you take steps towards protecting your identity. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) estimates that it can take an average of 18 months and up to 200 hours of work to recover from identity theft, so you should consider signing up for a service that offers both credit monitoring and recovery assistance. That way if you ever become a victim of identity theft you can get the help you need to get back on your feet.
